Why am I, a 68-year-old grandfather, starting a blog? Because I feel I have something to say that others my age will benefit from reading. When you think of seniors my age, what image comes to mind? Is it someone old and out of touch? I must admit it is challenging trying to keep up with all of the current technologies available today. But those our age have seen and experienced more than most will ever experience. I feel it is our responsibility to share it with those less experienced.
When You Think of Seniors...
When you think of seniors, you probably think of someone who is retired or is approaching retirement, someone who is ready to kick back and watch life pass, which is what a classmate of mine told me. I was shocked. You mean there isn’t anything you haven’t accomplished yet that still beckons you forward.
I know most of us at this point in life have had all of the excitement we could handle. I guess I am one of the unlucky ones. You see I am driven by the desire to accomplish more than I have heretofore.
Yes, I have raised a family and kept food on the table and clothes on our backs, but I feel there is so much more that I can accomplish. I can share my experiences so others coming behind me can benefit from them and not have to walk the path I have walked. I can explain what it feels like to be unemployed, depressed and almost with no hope.
I am familiar with drugs and their effect on our psyche. I know what it is like to try and remember what happened last year, five years ago or ten years ago and not be able to remember because I was stoned on marijuana. When I say I have had experiences, I am not whistling Dixie.
Often we don’t know what we want.
Sometimes we are not really sure what we want until we see someone else doing or having or enjoying their present activities, so I am striving to become the example others might be seeking. In some quarters, it is called being the lead dog.
I look around at all of the really successful people enjoying life, and I realize I can do that too and have the level of fun they are having.
Maybe it comes down to helping others.
You see, I never had very much materially, and I am still waiting to enjoy the exciting life. But all of those who have become successful are telling me I can do it, too. I can become everything I ever wanted to be, within reason. I once wanted to be a professional basketball player, but now, that is impossible. It just comes down to helping others. I understand my level of happiness is going to be measured somewhat by how many people I have helped overcome their fears.
And let’s be candid. If you are reading this article, there is something in your life you would have liked to have accomplished or at least tried.
Why didn’t you? There was a thought, even if in the back of your mind, that you could not do it. That you could not be successful at it. That is why I am here, to help you with those mind games, and encourage you to try, to give it your best shot. If you don’t succeed, which you will if you put forth enough effort, you will feel better for having tried.
