Our health isn’t very good. Look around you, a large swatch of us in general, and Baby Boomers in particular, are overweight and suffer from diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s, arthritis and more. In 2011, the CDC said these are the diseases that would affect us most going forward.
The question on my mind is, how did we get in such a shape? With all of the modern sciences and medical advances, why are we so sickly?
The CDC, in that same report, said that obesity is one of the leading risk factors for diabetes. Diabetes increases the risk of serious health problems such as, high blood pressure, vision loss, kidney disease, nerve damage, and cardiovascular disease. People with diabetes are also two to four times more likely to have heart disease or a stroke. And this is just the effects of diabetes. We have not covered heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s disease or any of the other conditions plaguing us today.
I believe it stems from our belief in the entities we counted on to keep us safe. If we believe Con-Agra and the FDA were looking out for our best interest, we have been misled. Con-Agra has thousands of scientist discovering ways of increasing plant yield, increasing shelf life, and supposedly making the foods we consume more nutritional. But man can’t improve on Mother Nature. With all these advancements, we are getting sicker and sicker, earlier and earlier in life. Our youth are now suffering from diseases once only know in older adults. What is happening? Some, if not all of our suffering, stems from the processed foods we eat.
Do you eat fast foods or do you eat farm-raised or free range chickens, fish or meat? What I mean by farm-raised is, were the animals you eat allowed to roam freely and eat their normal diet or were they fed grain, corn or soy beans while they stood in place all day? This is not the animal that produces healthy meat and consuming it will not be healthy for our diet.
How much sugar do you consume? Ever thought about it? If you check, there is sugar in everything that did not grow in a garden. All canned items such as, ketchup, peanut butter, vegetables, beans and everything that comes in a box, contain sugar. Now, do you see why we are so overweight?
Lastly, here is a question; who is in the worst shape, he who cannot read or he who will not read? I am suggesting the latter, because he thinks he knows, and therefore, you can’t teach him.
If we do nothing else, at least read the labels on the foods we are considering eating, and if one of the ingredients is sugar, I would suggest putting that item back on the shelf.
That is going to mean you will consume much less processed food going forward, but isn’t that the idea behind getting a handle on your health?
Comment below and let me know your thoughts. How do you manage eating a healthy diet?
I have made it my goal in life to help every Baby Boomer finally become who they were meant to be.
